Ready your H-vac system for summer

I’d like to start this blog with a thank you for all the positive feedback we have received so far. I appreciate your responses and plan on using them to make my column better with each entry.

So here we are in May and who doesn’t love to get their windows opened up and feel that spring breeze? But have you thought about your homes’ H-vac system yet? To run efficient in the summer months there are a few things you need to check.

To get you the best advice I visited my friend, Bill, at Heating and Cooling Two in Maple Grove to get the professional’s opinion. Every system is a little different and brand specific to maintenance, but some things you should be able to check on any system.

Start with your filters. Change your furnace filter monthly, it’s important as that is the air you breathe and it also keeps the furnace free from debris. Next check the filters on your homes’ air exchanger–vacuum them clean or blow them out. Many can be damaged beyond repair if they get wet and could result in replacing the unit completely so use the dry methods I offered.

Set your furnace humidifier unit to off or “summer” setting or turn it on intermittently during the summer. Check your outside air intake making sure it is clean and free from debris such as over grown landscaping or possibly birds, bugs, etc.

Next take the cover off from your A.C. unit and promptly throw it away. The unit is made to endure the seasons, the cover simply gives the mice a nice insulated home. Next fall simply put a piece of plywood cut to size over it with a block to hold it down. This will prevent damage from falling icicles. Next spray out your A.C. unit with a garden hose. You should have no reason to open it up.

With these tips you should have a home that is breathing properly.

If you have a question you would like addressed in a future blog, feel free to send it to me and I will get to them in the order I receive them. Thanks!

Trent
