The children have grown and moved out, yet the clients’ house still looked like their children lived there. The clients wanted to convert their main level that consisted of three bedrooms, two baths, family, dining and living room into their dream retirement oasis. They wanted a place where they could enjoy the Minnesota seasons and grow old together. One-level functional living with modern finishes and clean lines was the clients’ request with beautiful views of the lake that surrounds their backyard.
The new layout consisted of an elongated foyer, of which the clients never had before, to create movement into the great room as guests enter. As you pass through the foyer you enter the great room and kitchen area. The kitchen consists of clean lines and modern fixtures. The white cabinets contrast with the dark wood floors to create variety. The large island and open floor plan is perfect for entertaining. The back wall was changed to large windows to emphasize the gorgeous lake view.
A larger opening was created into the family room and the fireplace was updated with new stone and cabinetry. New patio doors were added to enter onto the deck.
The three bedrooms on the main level were converted into a luxury master suite. The suite has sliding glass doors that enter onto a private deck that overlooks the lake. The private study provides room for storage and space to work for both homeowners. The master closet has one side for him and one side for her; high glass windows provide natural lighting and privacy.
A large vanity area draws the eye forward into the master bathroom. The ceramic heated floors are great for cold winter mornings. The free standing bathtub creates a focal point in this gorgeous space. His and her sinks have built-in medicine cabinets to make the most out of the space. A custom shower was designed for the homeowners.
A sliding door allows for easy access from the master bathroom into the large laundry room. A utility sink plus a large counter top finish off the laundry room.
The garage was elongated to create a back entry that leads into a mudroom and storage area. The exterior of the house took on some dramatic changes. The flat roof on the garage was turned into a gable style roof. The front courtyard was previously covered with a large stucco wall; the wall was torn down for open outdoor entertaining. The white stucco was changed to maintenance free Hardie board shakes with cultured stone as an accent. In the back of the house, one deck was enlarged and maintenance free decking with metal balusters and cedar railings were installed on both decks to take advantage of the lake views. By changing the roof lines and adding dormers to the rear roof, we were able to change the “hacienda” into the sleek stylish rambler the customer craved.
The owners decided to live in their house through the entire renovation, which was the entire main level of their house. The constant presence of the customer gave us a daily reminder of the necessity to be extremely clean, professional and most importantly time efficient.
The clients wanted a place to retire in. Providing the clients with a luxury one-level living space gave them everything they asked for and more.
